Beck – американский певец, поэт, мультиинструменталист. Полное имя – Бек Дэвид Кэмпбелл. Автор 12-ти студийных альбомов, одной книги песен, многократный лауреат Грэмми. Бек славится широким спектром жанров, в которых он пишет песни. Среди прочих встречаются фанк, фолк, рок, рэп и т. д. Свой интерес к музыке объясняет тем, что родился в семье музыканта и рос в неблагополучном латинском квартале, наполненном атмосферой разных музыкальных стилей.
Бек родился в 1970-м году в Лос-Анджелесе. Его отец – канадский музыкант, который позже будет участвовать в записи альбомов сына – ушёл из семьи. Мальчик рос в мультикультурном пространстве: его соседями были выходцы из разных стран, по матери он – еврей-ортодокс, дед его – священник-пресвитерианин. В 1985-м Бек бросает школу, путешествует по Америке, по Европе и занимается самообразованием. В конце 80-х возвращается домой, бедный, но полный энтузиазма. Работает на разных подённых работах, играет в местных группах на чём придётся, пишет свою музыку.
Известность к нему пришла в начале 90-х с его акустическими работами в стиле lo-fi. Первый сингл Бека «Loser» выходит в 1993-м сверхмалым тиражом. Тем не менее, запись «выстреливает» и уже скоро Бека начинают звать на концерты, а лейблы приглашают к сотрудничеству.
