Funkmaster Flex (настоящее имя Aston Taylor) сын ямайского ди-джея, родился в Бруклине, Нью-Йорк, США. Когда Chillout перешёл на «WBLS», Flex начинает аккомпанировать ему и вскоре он уже раскачивает толпы в клубах и на вечеринках, после чего люди начинают обращать внимание на его навыки ди-джея. Но Flex пошёл дальше, начав работать на самой мощной коммерческой хип-хоп станции в городе, под названием «HOT97». Спродюсировав несколько синглов, Flex в 1995 году начинает работу над выпуском компиляций, первая из которых называлась «The Mix Tape, Vol. 1: 60 Minutes Of Funk» на «Loud Records». В 1999 году Flex и Big Kap выпускают «The Tunnel», ещё одно звёздное собрание, содержащее в себе классические фристайлы Бигги и Тупака.
