Гордон родился 17 ноября 1938. В детстве пел в церковном хоре. Учился в голливудском колледже музыки. Первая его группа - дуэт c Тэрри Вилан, Two Tones. В 1962 они выпустили альбом концертных записей. Первый сольник Гордона вышел в 1966 под названием Lightfoot!.
Песни If You Could Read My Mind, Sundown и The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald попали в золотые фонды музыки.
