Heaven Shall Burn были основаны осенью 1996 года в городе Заальфельд, Германия. Вскоре после этого под знаменем Consense, свет увидело первое демо команды. После изменений в составе, весной 1997 года в команду пришли Erik (бас-гитара) и Markus (вокал) с которыми было записано второе демо. Сформировав стабильное ядро банды, ребята начали играть на многочисленных местных концертах и фестивалях. Спустя некоторое время группа подписала с Deeds Of Revolution Records контракт, после чего вышел первый MCD Heaven Shall Burn, получивший название «In Battle There Is No Law», который появился на прилавках музыкальных магазинов осенью 1998 года и стал своеобразным миксом Death Metal / HC и Thrash Metal. Через несколько недель после релиза MCD, к HSB присоединился новый гитарист Patrick.
Deeds Of Revolution Records так же выпустили сплит HSB вместе с Fall Of Serenity поздней осенью 1999 года. После раздумий группа дала добро Impression Records на выпуск первого полноценного альбома «Asunder» (дата релиза: 8-е апреля 2000 года). Тем временем, Lifeforce Records тоже уделяли огромное внимание HSB и приняли участие в переиздании релизов группы за пределами Европы. Летом 2000 года на Lifeforce Records вышел сплит Caliban/HSB. Проведя турне по Испании, Португалии, Швейцарии, Италии, странам Бенилюкс, Чешской Республике и дав тысячи живых выступлений по всей Европе, команда засела в студии для записи новых песен для альбома, который вышел в 2002 году и был назван «Whatever It May Take».
