Лос-Анджелесский квинтет Local Natives – одна из тех групп, которые попросту вынуждают слушателя постоянно отвлекаться на проведение параллелей и сравнений. Впрочем, подобными вещами грешат примерно восемь современных исполнителей из десяти, но Local Natives обошли в этом соревновании практически всех. Эта группа в своей музыке использует не абстрактные «тренды» - она берет конкретные вещи у конкретных исполнителей: афро-поповые ритмы у Vampire Weekend, раскатистое многоголосье у Fleet Foxes, закрученные гармонии у Grizzly Bear. Как ни странно, Local Natives выглядят, при этом, намного лучше большинства групп, занимающихся примерно тем же самым. Во-первых, они, кажется, совсем не стремятся скрыть свою страсть к использованию чужих придумок, прикрыв ее фиговым листочком претензий и концептов, а во-вторых, умеют писать замечательные песни. На “Gorilla Manor” практически нет проходного материала: нет, конечно, и особо въедающегося в память, но откровенно неудачных композиций Local Natives не пишут – это факт. Почти в каждой вещи тут припасен хук: даже, казалось бы, не слишком интересные композиции, вроде «Cubism Dream» где-нибудь ближе к концу вполне могут обернуться номерами удивительной красоты и драматизма. Если бы еще кто-нибудь намекнул Local Natives на то, что далеко не каждая песня должна длиться от четырех до пяти минут, то “Gorilla Manor” стал бы еще более динамичной и собранной записью.
