Основа и движущая сила японской группы Shonen Knife - это сестры Наоко Ямано (Naoko Yamano, вокал, гитара, бас, клавишные) и Ацуко Ямано (Atsuko Yamano, ударные, бас, вокал).
В 1981-м году, в Осаке они вместе с Мичи Накатани (Michie Nakatani, бас) сформировали группу и начали создавать свою музыку, по большей части под влиянием их любимых панк-рокеров Ramones, Jam и Buzzcocks, а также Kiss. Назание Shonen Knife произошло от марки японских карманных ножей. Трио понравилось, как эти два слова - «Shonen» (в переводе с японского - «мальчик») и «Knife» (англ. «нож») вместе образуют ощущение чего-то прелестного, но опасного. Сочетание как нельзя лучше соответствовало их идеальному имиджу и вскоре стало названием группы.
В 1982-м году состоялось их первое выступление - в Осаке. Никто из участниц не играл до этого на традиционных для рока инструментах. Это, однако, не помешало их энергичным выступлениям и цепляющей панк-музыке (исполняемой как на английском, так и на японском языках), получить мгновенную известность не только по всей андерграундной сцене Японии, но и за её пределами - в США и Британии. Несмотря на то, что в те времена рок-музыка во всем мире, а тем более в Японии, считалась делом мужским, Shonen Knife не испытывали какой-то дискриминации, наоборот - по словам Наоко, мужские группы хотели играть с ними, и у них не было недостатка в концертах.
С 1983-го Shonen Knife выпустили несколько дисков на независимых лейблах, которые еще больше расширили круг фэнов группы по всему миру. В 1989-м году в США даже вышел трибьют Shonen Knife - диск «Every Band Has A Shonen Knife Who Loves Them», в записи которого приняли участие такие группы, как Sonic Youth и L7.
