Carlo Gesualdo - Biography

Prince of Venosa and Count of Conza, Carlo Gesualdo (1566-1613) was the great-nephew of Pope Pius IV and nephew to St. Carlo Borromeo. He became heir to the throne of his principality after his older brother’s death.

In 1590, he caught his wife (and first cousin) Maria d'Avalos in bed with Fabrizio Carafa, the Duke of Andria. The accounts of what happened next were embellished over time, but witnesses on the scene saw Gesualdo stab his wife more than 20 times, forcing Carafa to watch the murder before then killing him as well and hacking away at their bodies repeatedly. Because of his noble status, Gesualdo was acquitted of any crime.

After this, Gesualdo devoted his attention to composing some of the most experimental music of his era, frequently straying far from tonality and expressing extremes of emotion. He has been an enduring figure of fascination in music history due to his sublime musical skill and his horrific violent acts.
